Your Rights as a Donor

Donor Bill of Rights

As a donor to SCSUF, you have the right to:

1. Be Informed

Know the mission of the Foundation and how we intend to use your gift to advance student success and institutional priorities.

2. Transparency and Accountability

Access the Foundation’s most recent audited financial statements and gain insight into how your support is managed.

3. Responsible Governance

Be informed of the individuals serving on the SCSUF Board of Directors and expect them to exercise sound, ethical, and prudent oversight.

4. Appropriate Use of Gifts

Be assured your gift will be used for the purpose(s) for which it was given, and that your donor intent will be honored in perpetuity, unless otherwise modified in accordance with law.

5. Timely Acknowledgment and Recognition

Receive prompt and meaningful acknowledgment of your gift and be recognized in a manner aligned with your preferences.

6. Confidentiality

Have your personal information treated with care and confidentiality in accordance with state and federal laws.

7. Professional Conduct

Expect all representatives of the Foundation to act ethically, respectfully, and with the highest level of professionalism.

8. Clarity on Solicitors

Be informed whether those soliciting your gift are Foundation staff, volunteers, or contracted fundraising professionals.

9. Privacy and Communication Preferences

Choose to remove your name from mailing lists the Foundation may share and control how and when we contact you.

10. Ask Questions and Get Clear Answers

Ask questions and receive prompt, accurate, and respectful responses about your gift or the Foundation’s operations.

Additional Commitment from SCSUF

Understanding Legal and Institutional Guidelines

Donors have the right to understand the legal, institutional, and financial frameworks that govern their gifts. This includes:

  • South Carolina state laws and IRS regulations that guide gift administration
  • Policies regarding restricted, unrestricted, and endowed funds
  • The role of UPMIFA (Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act) in managing and modifying endowed gifts

Once a gift is accepted and its purpose is documented, the Foundation is legally and ethically obligated to administer that gift according to its terms. Modifications can only be made under appropriate legal processes or with the donor’s consent, where permitted.
